Keratoconus Treatment India | Corneal Transplant Delhi
Keratoconus is the progressive
deterioration within the cornea causing it to thin and change in
appearance to conical shape than the normal curve shape.
Cornea is actually the clear central
part of front surface of eye, through which we see the world. It has
the shape of a dome like a ball. Some times the structure of cornea
wont be able to hold the shape and it protrudes like a cone. This
nature of cornea is called Keratoconus.
How it causes?
Collagen – Tiny fibres of protein
help keep the cornea in shape and protect it from protruding. When
these fibres got affected with any injury or got weak, collagen is
unable to keep the shape and bulges more like cone shaped.
This may affect children and adults as
well. It is good to have your eyes checked for keratoconus in the
beginning stage. And for children it should have been checked at the age of 10. The condition is likely to get
affected mostly for those who have any medical issues like allergy
caused by any medicines. The condition could be related to severe eye
rubbing as well. Initial evidence cant be pointed for the reason why
the eye starts to keep change in shape.
Normally keratoconus could be seen in
teenagers or could be seen in people of age 30. Possibility cant be
ruled out that it will affect on older people as well, but that is
less common.
Symptoms and Signs
As the cornea is getting bulged it
causes in progressive nearsightedness and uneven astigmatism with
distorted and cloudy vision.
How the changes will affect one's eye?
Cornea Shape change can happen quickly
or it will take years to happen the changes. The changes could result
in blurred vision, halos and glare at night. This may continue for
years and both eyes have the chance of getting affected eventually.
Normally it affects one eye and later to the next eye.
One should not be focused properly
without contact lenses or glasses if the changes in the cornea
happened. If the condition is so critical the opthalmologist may
recommend for a Corneal Transplant.
Cornea Transplant is other wise known
as corneal grafting is an operative procedure where the affected
cornea is replaced by donated graft (corneal tissue) in its
totally(penetrating keratoplasty) in part (lamellar keratoplasty).
The corneal tissue received from the recently dead person with no
known diseases or other factors that may affect the donated tissue or
health of the recipient is used for corneal grafting.
The surgical process is done by
ophthalmologists normally done on an outpatient basis. Corneal
Transplant is performed only when keratoconus conservative surgery and
cross-linking is failed to heal cornea anymore.
